3 Things to Talk About on Social Media in November

A few suggestions for social media fodder this month – these also work great for displays and programming, too.  There are lots more possibilities – please share your ideas in the comments!

1. NaNoWriMo – It’s National Novel Writing Month and libraries across the country are participating.  How about a Pinterest board featuring novels created during this month and then published?  You can also tweet out or post writing prompts, inspirational quotes, and words of encouragement to budding writers. #NaNoWriMo

2. National Picture Book Month – From their website, “Picture Book Month is an international literacy initiative that celebrates the print picture book during the month of November.”  Solicit staff recommendations (and not just from staff in the Children’s Room) and then create posts featuring cover image and brief blurb for Facebook, or tweet out recommendations, with a personal touch – “Our director loves Mo Willem’s Knuffle Bunny series, and so do her kids!”  Don’t forget to provided a shortened link to your catalog entry for the book. On Pinterest, you can re-purpose this same list, or create a open board and ask others to pin their favorite books as well. #picturebookmonth

3. Turkey Day! This is one of the biggest months for food lovers.  How about Pinterest boards featuring Thanksgiving food – one for sides, one for turkey, one for vegetarian options? On Facebook, there’s a cornucopia of possibilities:

– What’s the best thing you ever cooked for Thanksgiving?

– Feature cookbooks from your collection along with a selected recipe.

– What’s your favorite Thanksgiving-themed movie?

– If you’re going over the river and through the woods for the holidays, what will you be listening to in the car?

Don’t forget to use social media to communicate holiday closings for your library, and of course remind folks that if the relatives are driving them crazy, the library is a great place to escape to!
